D3.1 – Smart transportation training modules

D3.1 – Smart transportation training modules

The Smart Transportation training modules are the teaching materials of the course “Sustainable and Smart Transportation in Tourism”, developed by Université Lumière Lyon 2 on the basis of the curriculum defined in D2.2. They were first delivered to the partners’ teachers during the intensive training session in Lyon, 15–19 June 2026, and are now available on the SOHO Moodle platform.

Where to find the materials. All the training materials are uploaded on the SOHO Moodle platform, moodle.sohoproject.eu, as the course Sustainable Transportation in Tourism, with a copy for each partner university in Malaysia (USM, UTAR), Vietnam (UTE, UD) and Bangladesh (AIUB, JU). Access is granted to the teachers and students enrolled by the partners.

The materials

Unit Lecturers Slides What it covers
Sustainable Public Transport for Tourism Destinations Dr. Thanh-Ha Bargas ≈100 Tourism mobility and its carbon footprint (transport = 23 % of global CO₂; tourism-transport emissions projected from 1.6 to 2.0 Gt by 2030), domestic tourism, social drivers of travel, the UNWTO sustainability pillars and MST indicator framework; case studies: Curitiba and Rio BRT, the Florence tramway, micromobility, Copenhagen cycle superhighways and CopenPay, Singapore travel-demand management (ALS, VQS, ERP); analysis tools: PESTLE and SWOT with weighted scoring.
Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) in Tourism Dr. Thanh-Ha Bargas ≈78 MaaS as a product-service system: APIs for data, booking, payment and user accounts; market size and business models (commission, subscription, pay-as-you-go, public procurement); Sochor’s integration levels 0–4 and their link with certification schemes (Green Key, EU Ecolabel, GSTC); governance roles and regulation (ITS Directive, Finnish Act on Transport Services, TOMP-API); case studies Helsinki Whim and the Dutch MaaS pilots; Porter’s Five Forces applied to MaaS.
Environmental and Social Impacts of Sustainable Tourism Transportation Prof. Aïcha Sekhari, Dr. Nizar Haous — Carbon accounting of tourist mobility, modal shift, resident quality of life, accessibility and social inclusion; the sustainability paradox (degrowth, ecological modernisation, behavioural change).
Smart City Transportation Solutions for Tourism Prof. Yacine Ouzrout ≈37 Intelligent Transport Systems (Directive 2010/40/EU), passenger information, parking guidance and demand-responsive transport; real-time traffic management with adaptive signal control (SCATS, SCOOT), V2X, traffic-flow theory; city examples London, Singapore ERP, Los Angeles ATSAC and Lyon CORALY with Aimsun Live forecasting; enabling technologies (IoT, 5G, edge/cloud, AI) and the challenges of privacy, interoperability and seasonal congestion.
Data Analytics for Sustainable Tourism Transportation Prof. Yacine Ouzrout ≈77 The five-step data-science workflow applied to tourism transport (collection, cleaning with pandas/OpenRefine, exploratory analysis, modelling with QGIS/SUMO/Aimsun, deployment); predictive models from ARIMA/Prophet and logit to Random Forest, XGBoost and LSTM; a hands-on case on a synthetic Paris visitor dataset with Jupyter notebooks; big-data architectures (GTFS-RT, data lakes, Spark) and the Paris RATP/IDFM and London TfL open-data cases; GDPR, anonymisation and ethics.
Sustainable Tourism Destination Planning + case-study workshop Prof. Aïcha Sekhari, Dr. Nizar Haous, Dr. Thanh-Ha Bargas — Destination-level mobility planning, stakeholder mapping and the integrated workshops with ONLYLYON and the Beaujolais tourism stakeholders used as live cases.

Teaching approach

The module is designed for 34 contact hours (17 hours of lectures, 17 hours of fieldwork and computer lab) plus 20 hours of individual study. Each unit combines a lecture deck, real case studies and a structured analysis tool that the learners apply to their own destination – PESTLE and SWOT for public transport, Porter’s Five Forces for MaaS, Jupyter notebooks for data analytics. Assessment consists of an online test and an oral final project. During the Lyon training session the units were delivered over five days, including site visits and meetings with ONLYLYON Tourisme & Congrès and the Beaujolais tourism actors.
